Stepping out of the salon with your new hair color is one of the best feelings ever. You want it to stay that vibrant forever, but during the summer, chlorine, salt water and the sun can dull your color. It doesn’t have to be that way, though! Check out our tips for keeping your color fresh all summer long.
Keep Your Hair Out of the Pool
Swimming is necessary in the summer, but a dip in the pool can cause you to lose the vibrance of your hair. Chlorine is a bleach, which means it strips color from hair. Blonde hair may turn green and other colors can become dull and lose highlights. Throw your hair up into a bun if you want to lounge in the pool. If you’re planning on getting your hair wet, soak it in clear water first. A quick shower or rinse beforehand allows your hair to soak up clean water and less chlorine water. And when you hop out of the pool, wash your hair with professional shampoo that protects color right away to remove any chemicals.
Protect Your Hair from the Sun
When it’s a beautiful day out, you want to spend your time outside. We get it. However, the sun can damage your hair, and if you spend a lot of time in the sunshine, you may notice discoloration and dryness. To save your hair strands, wear a hat or go out in the mornings or evenings when the sun is less intense. UV damage is strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so protect your hair color especially during these hours.
Use the Proper Shampoo and Conditioner
We touched on it already, but we will say it again. You need to use shampoo and conditioner that is formulated for colored hair. The last thing you want is your beautiful color (and the hard-earned money you spent on it) washing down the drain. If you’re a redhead, use sulfate-free products. Red color has the hardest time staying in hair, and sulfates will strip it away even faster. If you’re blonde, purple toned shampoos and conditioners will remove green tinges. Every color has products specifically designed to keep it fresh. During your color appointment, as your stylist which product you should be using for your hair color.
