We’ve all heard the rule that we should get our hair cut every six to eight weeks to keep it healthy, but is that true? And if it is, why is that the case? In addition to keeping your hairstyle looking its best, regular trims remove split ends and promote healthy growth.
Your Style will Stay in Tact
If you have layers in your hair, you’ll want them to look their best by coming in for regular trims every six to eight weeks. Hair styles with a lot of layers look piecey and beautiful right away. At the four week mark, they have a lived-in look, but by week eight, they just look messy and wonky. Regular trims will keep this style fresh. If you have an a-line bob, see your stylist every six weeks to keep it’s shape and lines, as well.
Fine hair is a little tricky. See your stylist every four to six weeks in order to maintain your hair’s shape. Fine hair needs to be constantly reshaped, but you don’t want to cut too much off, which is why small trims every four to six weeks is ideal. If you have short hair like a pixie cut or if you have damaged hair, you should visit the salon every four weeks, too. For short hair, these trims will keep your style in check, and for damaged hair, regular trims will gradually fade out the broken, damaged hair.
If you have curly hair, if you have long, straight or wavy hair or if you have natural hair, you can wait a little longer in between trims. These styles don’t typically have a lot of shape that needs to be maintained, and they require more maintenance at home. Most people with these styles have to take extra care of their hair at home, which means their healthy hair can go a few extra weeks without a trim. Eight to twelve weeks before an appointment works for these styles.
Keep Split Ends to a Minimum
No one likes split ends, and the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off. When a hair splits, it will not get any longer, and often the split will continue up the hair shaft. Hair that has a lot of split ends will never get long. If you want long and healthy hair, regular trims are a necessity. Regular trims don’t speed up your hair growth, but they allow your hair to grow beyond a point where the shaft would normally break.
