4 Tips on Wearing Makeup When Your Skin is Dry

tips to wear makeup when skin is dry

Winter in Wisconsin has arrived in full force, and with it, it’s brought cold, dry air. To combat the freezing weather, many of us turn up the thermostat or enjoy an extra ten minutes in a steaming shower. These also rob our skin of moisture, though. Many women struggle with dry skin during the harsh winter months, and makeup can make dry skin visibibly worse. We’ve found a few ways to keep our skin happy during Midwest winters, and giving up makeup isn’t one of them.

1. Exfoliate Your Skin

You should be washing your face every day, and if your skin has suddenly become dry, use an exofliant. An exoliating cleanser will remove dry, dead skin, leaving you with a fresh and smooth face. We like Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant because it’s non-abrasive. Make sure you don’t stop there, though. Because exfoliants can also be drying, be sure to moisturize your face afterwards. Apply an ultra-hydrating lotion in the mornings and nights to combat dry skin.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

One of the best and easiest (and inexpensive!) ways to keep your skin hydrated is to drink plenty of water. Water promotes healthy and happy skin. Avoid excessive coffee and alcohol; they’ll cause you to use the little girl’s room more often, and you’ll lose water from your system more quickly.

3. Set Makeup with a Hydrating Set Spray

Makeup will settle into the little cracks around your dry skin, and one way to help prevent this is by using a setting spray that hydrates your skin. Your makeup will stay in place and will look freshly applied no matter the time of day. Urban Decay carries a great hydrating setting spray.

4. Avoid Fingers for Makeup Application

It’s tempting to apply your foundation with your fingers, but your hands will steal moisture from your face. Avoid touching your face as much as possible. Brushes and sponges are the way to go for makeup application, especially if you have dry skin.
