There’s a lot of really great info out there about hair. But with the good, there’s always a little bit of bad. You may believe some common misconceptions about hair, which means you might not be helping out your hair as much as you think.
1. You Can Repair Split Ends
There are lots of products out there that claim to repair split ends. But all the hair products in the world can’t take two splits and glue them back together. The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off. Rather than spend money on hair products, book a trim appointment with your hair stylist.
2. If You Pluck One Grey Hair, Two More Will Appear
Maybe you’ve heard the myth that if you pluck a grey hair, two more will show up in its place. This isn’t true. If you pluck a grey hair and you see more appear, that would have happened no matter what. The pigment cells in your hair start to die as you get older, which leads to grey. We’re not giving you permission to pluck, though. Too much plucking leads to weak hair and can stop growth all together.
3. Don’t Color Your Hair When Your Pregnant
Some pregnant women don’t want to color their hair because of risks associated with inhaling ammonia. The good news is that the levels of ammonia in hair color are really low, so you don’t need to worry about it. Plus, if you go to a salon, they have industrial ventilation.
4. Shampoos Need to Lather to Clean
We associate suds with cleanliness, but your shampoo doesn’t need to lather a lot to mean it’s cleaning your hair. Shampoos use a foaming agent called sulfates. There’s some discussion on whether or not sulfates are good for you, so if your shampoo skips out on the sulfates, it will still clean your hair.
5. Towel Dry Your Hair
Is there a better feeling than stepping out of a shower and wrapping up in a fluffy towel? Your hair may disagree. If you vigorously dry your hair with a towel, you’re breaking your hair. Be gentle. Squeeze your hair with a towel instead.
