What to Know Before You Color Your Hair a Bright Color

what to know before you color you hair a bright color

Bright blue, hot pink and fiery red are gorgeous hair colors, but like all bright colors, you need to understand the journey you’re about to embark on before you go bold. Bright colors are much different than natural hair colors like blondes and brunettes. Here’s what you need to know before you totally transform your hair.

You’re Going to Have to Bleach It

Unless your hair is already extremly light, you’ll need to bleach your hair. Most unnatural colors are semi-permanent, meaning they only deposit color. Your hair needs to be light for the new color to show. If you want something trendy, like a pastel color, you may even have to bleach it several times.

This Is a Process

Bleaching will damage your hair, so before you start this process, you need the healthiest hair possible. Try not to straighten or curl it for weeks (even months) before you color your hair. Condition your hair leading up to the appointment and don’t color it. If you have to bleach your hair multple times, you could have weeks between sessions.

Invest in Amazing Products

Once you’ve bleached your hair, you need to take care of it. Restore health by using high-quality products. Trust us, it makes a huge difference!

Prepare for Fade

Unnatural colors, because they are semi-permanent, will fade. You may have to color your hair every two weeks to keep it the shade you love.

Rinse Hair in Cold Water

Want to slow the fade process? Wash and rinse your hair in cool water. A cold shower might not sound like a lot of fun, but it greatly helps in keeping your color in tact.

Some Color Will Stick Around

Your gorgeous blue hair might fade to a green color you hate, and that color just won’t go away. Unless you’re prepared for a lot of upkeep and you’re willing to regularly color your hair, you might eventually end up with a color you don’t like due to fading.

Prepare for Bleed

Bright colors look great on hair, but are you ready for them in your shower, your pillow or your collar? They will bleed for a while after your appointment, even though we rinse it.

If you’re ready for the upkeep, go for it! We can help you color your hair whatever shade you want. But it’s important to know as much as you can about hair color before you go bold.
